There are various herbs that are beneficial for lung health and help in fighting off respiratory illness. Some of these include garlic, ginger, cumin, turmeric, oregano and more. Each individual herb has many unique compounds that make it useful for health issues. People have been using oregano for thousands of years to add flavor to dishes and also helps to treat health conditions. The name oregano comes from the Greek words “oros” meaning mountain and “ganos’ meaning joy. It is used in diet as supplements and as aromatic oil. There are different types of oregano and the most common type among them is Oregano vulgare. As oregano is high in antioxidants it could have anti-lung cancer properties.
Oregano contains carvacrol and rosmarinic acid and both are natural decongestants and antihistamines. Consuming oregano helps in improving lung function. The antioxidants thymol, ocimene, terpinene, limonene, carvacrol and caryophyllene are responsible for giving it great flavor and scent. As oregano and other herbs provide antioxidants, they help the body in eliminating free radicals which are toxic substances. These compounds neutralize free radical damage and also aid in lung cancer prevention.
This herbal medicine is used to treat many aliments such as skin sores, aching muscles, cramping, diarrhea, indigestion and boost overall health. Carvacol is a phenolic compoundthat is responsible for sensation of warmth in the mouth and tongue when you eat quality oregano.
There are some studies that suggest that oregano and its compounds may help in killing lung cancer cells. Scientists need to do more research to come at conclusive benefits of using oregano. Human studies using typical doses are required to be carried out to determine its effects.
