Lung cancer is a deadly form of cancer and is responsible for many deaths worldwide. More than two million cases of lung cancer are diagnosed annually. This increasing incidence of the disease is reflected by increasing incidence of mortality. Lung cancer often leads to anxiety, and psychological distress due to its treatment challenges as well as financial burden. This disease and its treatment leads to various mental health disorders and thus, adversely affects the treatment outcomes. Patients with lung cancer often experience various symptoms associated with the disease as well as the treatment. It has been reported that lung cancer patients have highest incidence of psychological distress. Also, lung cancer-related discomfort has been reported to be the most in comparison to other forms or cancer.
Most lung cancer patients have psychological problems and have a significant impact on patients’ quality of life. Some studies have been conducted to examine the prevalence of psychological distress among lung cancer patients. It has been found that those under the age of 60 years experience significantly elevated levels of psychological distress. Also, the socio-psychological variables also have impact on psychological distress. The lung cancer patients lacking family support levels lack emotional support and thus, face heightened risk of depression.
It has been found that psychological distress depends on the age, occupational status, income, symptoms and lifestyle. Those who keep themselves busy in routine exercises, eating balanced diet and a positive attitude helps in managing stress levels. The gender, marital stats and social support also plays an important part. We have discussed about how Quality of Life (QoL) affects lung cancer patients.
