Lung cancer cases in India are rising at an alarming rate and continuous researches are being conducted all around the country. Lung cancer accounts for a substantial portion of cancer-related deaths. Smoking has traditionally been seen as the main cause behind this deadly disease. A recent study has revealed that most lung cancer patients are those who have never smoked. The new research from The Lancet Regional Health Southeast Asia Journal tells that causes are beyond tobacco use.
Scientists have revealed that lung cancer in Southeast Asis is different from other parts of Asia and the West. The research focused on the part that a significant number of lung cancer patients in India have no history of smoking. Air pollution is causing lung cancer even among non-smokers. The experts from Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai revealed that the lung cancer research output ratio from India to the global research output stands at 0.51. The research unveiled that lung cancer typically manifests in India about ten years earlier than in Western nations, often diagnosed between ages 54 to 70.
In this research, the authors reveal that regional risk factors like air pollution and genetic mutations are also significant contributors. The study highlights the common regional factors that play crucial role are air pollution and genetic mutations. Factors like hormonal status and rise in poor air quality have been highlighted as the main causes behind lung cancer in Indians. Lung cancer accounts as the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in Southeast Asia with 1.85 million new cases reported. India and its numerous tier-1 and tier-2 cities including New Delhi remain polluted throughout the year and further increases the lung cancer risk among non-smokers.
