Mesothelioma is an aggressive form of cancer that occurs in thin layer of tissue covering the majority of internal organs. It is divided into different types based on what part of Mesothelioma is affected. Often, it affects the tissue surrounding the lungs. This most common type is called pleural Mesothelioma. Other rare types of Mesothelioma affect tissue in the abdomen, or heart or testes.

Symptoms of Mesothelioma

Symptoms of Mesothelioma appear when the tumor has spread and grown against the chest wall. Like in other types of cancer, early diagnosis can increase the chances of benefitting patients with more treatment options. The common symptoms include fever, shortness of breath, dry cough, chest pain, respiratory complications, fatigue, weakness in muscles etc.

Causes

The main cause behind Mesothelioma is asbestos exposure which can happen from repeated use of asbestos-contaminated consumer products. This type of cancer develops decades after exposure to asbestos. It takes time for asbestos fibers to cause the damage, leading to cancer.

Who are at Risk of Developing Mesothelioma?

The risk of developing Mesothelioma cancer occurs in people handling asbestos for a prolonged period of time. These can be persons serving as construction workers, electricians, miners, firefighters, veterans, textile mill workers etc.

Diagnosis of Mesothelioma

Your doctor carries out various different tests such as X-Ray of chest, CT scan, fluid drainage, thoracoscopy etc. to help diagnose Mesothelioma and know about its spread. The treatment for lung cancer depends on several factors including its spread and general health. If the cancer has already spread to an advanced stage, treatment is usually focused on controlling the symptoms.

Treatments

The possible treatments include chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery or a combination of these, according to the individual’s symptoms and issues. Chemotherapy remains the main treatment for Mesothelioma and uses medicine to shrink cancer. Surgery is done to remove the cancerous area and radiotherapy involves killing cancer cells via high-energy radiation.
