Lung Cancer Is No Longer Smokers’ Only Disease

Lung CancerLung cancer awareness month is celebrated every year in the month of November. Smoking remains the leading cause behind lung cancer but experts are now seeing a sharp rise of lung cancer among women who have never smoked. In India, lung cancer cases among women are surging. Women with no history of smoking are being affected and the reasons could be long-term exposure to polluted air.

Rising Lung Cancer Cases Among Non-Smoking Women

Women exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke can trigger DNA damage in lung cells. Exposure to indoor and outdoor air pollution is the key factor behind this alarming rise. Genetics can also raise lung cancer risk. It has been estimated that around 30% of non-smoker women can suffer from lung cancer. Lung cancer has emerged as sixth most common cancers among women.

Pollution and Genetic Factors at Play

In addition to smoke exposure from biofuels and cooking, prolonged residence in high Air Quality Index levels in also attributing towards lung cancer risk among women. Some studies have also revealed that Indian women are more likely to carry EGFR mutations, which Rs linked to non-small cell lung carcinoma. These mutations are notably more common in Asian women who do not smoke.

Experts Warn of Growing Concern

“Given the sustained pollution levels across Indian cities, India is poised to see a sharp rise in non-smoking lung cancer cases over the next decade, particularly among younger women,” said an oncologist from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.

Early Detection and Awareness Are Key

Early diagnosis of lung cancer is the only way to battle it especially in polluted cities of India. The air is full of carcinogenic gases and this is emerging as a real threat to everyone. All those experiencing persistent respiratory symptoms should consult a doctor for diagnostics tests.

Stay Alert and Take Preventive Measures

It is crucial to raise awareness and take preventive measures to prevent lung cancer. You should be attentive when it comes to your lungs.
