Study: Air Pollution Exposure Linked to Lung Cancer Risk

Air PollutionA new study published in Nature Communications, has found molecular signs of changes in the blood of people who had been exposed to air pollution. The interesting part is that these changes were detectable several years before they were diagnosed with lung cancer. These findings provide promising clues that could help shape future cancer research and prevention strategies.

Study Examines Air Pollution and Blood Changes

In this study, the team analyzed blood samples from 1357 cancer-free people in the ACS Cancer Prevention Study cohorts and found changes in small molecules that were linked to long-term exposure to air pollution. They found that eight metabolites were associated with both pollution exposure and subsequent lung cancer, while four showed statically significant mediation signals. Though the findings do not establish that these metabolites directly cause lung cancer but provide prospective evidence for biological pathways that could help in explaining how long-term air pollution contributes to lung carcinogenesis.

Air Pollution and Lung Cancer Screening

Long-term exposure to ambient air pollution is a known environmental risk factor for lung cancer and related respiratory diseases. But, lung cancer screenings are only recommended for those aged 50 to 80 years old with substantial history of smoking. This new study could guide future development of blood-based biomarkers that help to identify more popular with higher risk of lung cancer.

“What is especially exciting about this study is that we now identified measurable changes in human blood metabolome associated with air pollution exposure years before lung cancer was diagnosed,” says Donghai Liang, who is also a member of the Cancer Prevention and Control Research Program. “These new findings give us a clearer picture of the biological processes connecting air pollution and lung cancer. And with further validation, maybe one day, it could help us identify people at elevated risk and determine whether air pollution exposure should be considered in future prevention and screening strategies.”
