AI-Powered Chest X-Rays to Early Detect Lung Cancer

Lung CancerLung Cancer has one of the poorest survival rates and the main reason behind it is diagnosis at a later stage. The early the Cancer is detected, the better are the survival rates. Continuous research work is being carried out to help patients in its early detection and thus, early treatment. A new study has been presented at the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer 2024 World Conference on Lung Cancer which shows possibilities for early detection of lung cancer. The researchers have utilized AI-powered chest X-ray interpretation tool and found promising results in early detection. This AI-powered chest X-ray interpretation can identify lung nodules that may develop into lung cancer nearly three years before actual lung cancer symptoms appear.

This study was led by Dr. Passakorn WanchIjiraboon, and he analyzed chest X-ray images of newly diagnosed lung cancer patients over a period of one year. In this research, they focused on “missed” Lung cancer cases where the initial chest X-ray report fail to identify cancer six months before the definitive diagnosis. In this study, the team revealed that 18% of patients had missed lung cancer diagnoses and with average delay of nearly three years from the initial abnormal chest X-ray. Half of the missed diagnoses involved chest X-rays taken for non-respiratory reasons. The study reviewed and evaluated the chest X-ray image database of newly diagnosed lung cancer patients using qXR.

Passakorn Wanchaijiraboon said, “This approach can streamline decision-making and potentially improve patient survival through the earlier diagnosis of cancer.” Missed lung cancer diagnoses are significant concern for clinicians. Missed nodules are the third common reason for malpractice claims.
