Researchers at the Francis Crick Institute and University College London, funded by Cancer Research UK and the European Research Council have identified a 14-protein signature in the blood that has the ability to predict lung cancer risk more than five years before its diagnosis. The team was able to identify those who are at higher risk and thus, could work a major step towards lung cancer prevention.
Machine Learning Identifies 14 Key Proteins
The research has been published in Cell. The team has applied machine learning to blood plasma protein data from over 48,000 UK Biobank participants. The machine learning algorithms identified 14 key proteins in the blood that could predict future diagnosis of lung cancer within five years. Then, the team validated this protein signature in eight datasets from all around the world. They found that it was higher in patients who developed lung cancer in all studies in the future.
Air Pollution May Influence Lung Cancer Risk
The study found that pollution can increase both protein signature and abnormal lung cells which are linked to early cancer development. This new study suggested that drugs which block the action of inflammatory molecule could prevent lung cancer among those with high-risk protein signature.

Hayley Brown, Research Information Manager at Cancer Research UK said: “By revealing the earliest warning signs of cancer, this research brings us closer to intervening sooner and potentially stopping the disease before it starts.” “In doing so, it could help spare people and their loved ones from the impact of a cancer diagnosis, treatment, and everything that follows, allowing them instead to focus on the moments that matter most,” he added.
