Dealing with Loss of Appetite in Lung Cancer

Lung CancerOne of the most common issues being faced by lung cancer patients is the loss of appetite. It is very common and accounts for 9 out of 10 people with advanced cancer. The disease and its treatment can have effects that lead to loss of appetite which is called as anorexia. Some patients stop feeling interested in eating and some start losing weight. Dietician can help you make small dietary changes and recommend nutritional supplements to keep you well nourished.

Cause of Loss of Appetite

Lung cancer can cause loss of appetite for a number of reasons. Patients with advanced lung cancer can impact their ability to receive certain treatments and impact their quality of life. When the tumor is in or around parts of gastrointestinal tract, it may cause trouble in swallowing food. Sometimes, stress, dehydration and nausea might reduce a person’s appetite. In some cases, cancer related treatment can also cause loss of appetite. They may cause changes in taste or smell, pain, or constipation etc.

Coping up with Loss of Appetite

Lung cancer patients should take care of their dietary supplements. It is important to talk to your healthcare practitioner about any expected changes before any type of treatment. Some useful tips include eating small meals, avoiding drinking liquids with meals, having high-protein meals. It is suggested to eat on a schedule. Though loss of appetite is temporary but it may have serious implications. You should reach out to care team if loss of appetite continues for more days while experiencing issues like significant weight loss, chronically fatigued or fluid retention that causes swelling etc.
