Lung CancerLung Cancer is a serious health concern on a global level and remains one of the leading causes of death. It is responsible for a considerable number of deaths. Lung cancer is caused when there are uncontrolled cell division in the lung and these damaged cells divide themselves, leading to creation of tumors. Though smoking has remained the major cause behind this disease but this profile is shifting.

Rise Among Non-Smoking Women

Lung cancer cases among non-smoking women, linked to indoor air pollution, biomass fuel use and second-hand smoke are on rise. This shift is being seen in pattern of tumors across India. Lung adenocarcinoma is a type of non-small cell lung cancer and is known to be the most common form among non-smokers.

ICMR Study Predicts Sharp Increase by 2030

A recent study has been published in Indian Journal of Medical Research (IJMR). It says that India will likely see a sharp rise in lung cancer cases by 2030. According to this study, North-East region will be the worst-affected region in India and women will witness fastest increase. The new Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) study shows that lung cancer incidences will be highest in North-East.

Regional Trends Across India

In this study, they have included data from 57 populations across six regions. Aizawl recorded the highest number with age-standardised incidence at 35.9 per lakh among men and 33.7 per lakh among women. The study also found that southern districts like Kannur, Kasaragod and Kollam also saw high incidence of lung cancer among men with relatively low tobacco and alcohol use. Among women, Hyderabad and Bengaluru reported highest number of cases in south. The data highlights that lung cancer is increasing by nearly 6.7% annually among women and 4.3% among men in some regions.

Expert Insight

“We are seeing more lung cancer cases among non-smoking women, linked to indoor air pollution, biomass fuel use, second-hand smoke and occupational exposure,” said Dr Saurabh Mittal of AIIMS’s pulmonology department.
