Lung CancerLung biopsy is a form of medical treatment and there can be a number of reasons for doctors recommending it. Then, there are several types of biopsy and one selects according to the health conditions of the individual. Lung biopsy is a medical procedure in which the lung tissue samples are removed to find if lung disease or lung cancer is present.

Types of Lung Biopsy Procedures:

The various types of biopsy procedures include needle biopsy, thoracoscopic biopsy, open biopsy and transbronchial biopsy.

Transbronchial Biopsy

In this method, a flexible tube is inserted into the mouth or nose and from there to the lungs. The small tiny cells are taken out from the lung via the tube.

Lung Needle Biopsy

This method is usually followed when the lung cells can’t be reached via bronchoscopy. In this process, a needle is placed through the chest between two ribs and a sample is taken out from the outer area of the lung.

Open Biopsy

The doctor makes an incision in the skin on the chest and the piece of lung tissue is removed surgically. In severe cases, removal of lung lobe may also be performed, depending upon the patient’s condition.

Thoracoscopic Lung Biopsy

In this lung biopsy method, the doctor puts a breathing tube down the throat and then to the lungs. Small cuts are made on the chest between the ribs and then use tiny tools to take out some cells.

In addition to lung biopsy, the doctors also utilize other related procedures to help diagnose lung cancer or problems of lungs and respiratory tract.
