Significance of World Lung Cancer Day

World Lung Cancer Day is observed on August 1 every year to raise awareness about the causes and treatment of lung cancer. The campaign was first organized in the year 2012 by the Forum of International Respiratory Societies, in collaboration with the International Association for the study of Lung Cancer and American College of Chest Physicians.  The campaign takes into consideration all those that have been diagnosed with lung cancer and those who have been recovered from it to provide support for them.

Lung cancer continues to be one of the most common cancers worldwide and claims even more lives than breast, colon and prostate cancer yearly. In the early 20th century, lung cancer was a rare disease but it gradually increased with increased smoking and has become the most common type of cancer. The risk of lung cancer is many more times higher in smokers than in non-smokers. The age to start smoking, number of cigarettes smoked, type of cigarette etc. are some of the vital factors that have great influence on the risk of developing lung cancer.

It is important that one should stay informed about the benefits of early diagnosis of this deadly disease. When lung cancer is diagnosed at early stage, the treatment options widen and the recovery rate is also higher. The most common symptoms associated with lung cancer include coughing blood, chest, back pain or mucus.  World Lung Cancer Day is celebrated to raise awareness about this type of cancer and make significant improvements in the process of treatment.

To help spread the message about lung cancer, you can also inform your friends and family members about the risks involved and the factors contributing to them. One should work to aware as many people as they can about lung cancer.
