Importance of Exercise during Lung Cancer Treatment

Importance of ExerciseRegular exercise is something that is beneficial for everyone including lung cancer patients. Some people that the misconception that it may not be safe for people with lung cancer. But, this is not the case. There are various studies showing how exercises help to improve the cardio-respiratory fitness and quality of life among the patients. One should take out exercises that require less movement and exertion. Here are the benefits of exercises one gets during the lung cancer treatment.

Overcoming Fatigue

Fatigue is one of the common issues faced by lung cancer patients. Research has shown that the patients who engage in regular exercise experience less cancer-related fatigue and an improved quality of life. Various studies have also shown that the people who exercise on a regular basis experience 40 to 50% less fatigue.

Improving Cardio-Respiratory Fitness

Exercise helps to improve the circulatory system of transporting oxygen to working skeletal muscles. It also works to enhance the functional status of heart and lungs. The results depend on the age, gender and the amount of exercise one performs. The aerobic workout gets the heart pumping and keeps the person as fit and active as possible.

Lung Function

Regular exercises improve the lung function among the patients both pre and post surgery. It also helps patients with advanced stage of cancer as well. Exercise increases strength and pulmonary capacity.

Psychological Benefits

In addition to the physical benefits, exercise also lessens anxiety and depression among the lung cancer patients. Cancer diagnosis causes depression, anxiety, fear and stress and it is very essential to overcome them. Here, exercise plays a pivotal role and improve the psychological recovery. The self-esteem of the patients gets better as well with regular exercise.
