Identifying Lung Cancer Cough For Early Diagnosis And Treatment

Lung CancerWhen abnormal cells in your lungs start to grow uncontrollably, this is the condition of lung cancer. Such cells form a mass called as tumor. There are two types of lung cancer: non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer. The tricky part about this disease is that its symptoms do not show up early. The symptoms of lung cancer are like everyday health issues.

Why Cough is a Key Symptom

One the most common symptoms associated with lung cancer is cough. Lung cancer cough is persistent and does not go away but at the same time, persistent cough does not automatically mean it is cancer. Coughs are often dismissed as a symptom of common cold. It is essential to differentiate between these. There are two types of coughs: dry and wet. Dry cough feels scratchy in the throat while wet cough brings up mucus or phlegm.

Types and Characteristics of Lung Cancer Cough

Lung cancer cough is usually dry but is not the universal truth. The location of the tumor makes your cough feels different. When the tumor is near larger airways, it causes a strong and frequent cough. On the other hand, tumors deeper in lung tissues might get worse cough during lying down or taking a deep breath.

Warning Signs You Should Not Ignore

A cough that lingers for more than two or three weeks should be a cause of concern. If cough is accompanied with other symptoms like unexplained fatigue or weight loss; hoarseness or noticeable change in voice, wheezing etc.; it is essential to seek medical help. In case cough is accompanied with chest pain, it could be lung cancer symptom.

Importance of Early Diagnosis

The early the lung cancer is diagnosed, the better are the chances of survival. If person has cough for more than a couple of weeks or it getting worsened with time, it is essential to seek medical advice. Though cough may seem harmless but it is important to pay attention to it, especially when accompanied with other symptoms.
