The Government of India has released its first national lung cancer care guidelines. The aim is to help in improvement in how the disease is diagnosed, treated and managed. They aim to reduce treatment gap and ensure that patient-centric care is done across India.
Official Release and Key Recommendations
Union health minister of India, Sh. Jagat Prakash Nadda, has released the Lung Cancer Treatment and Palliation: Evidence-Based Guidelines at Kartavya Bhavan. The document outlines 15 evidence-based recommendations. These include but not limited to diagnosis, treatment and palliative care, applicable to public announcement private healthcare systems. The guidelines address wide variations in lung cancer care and late diagnosis remains a major challenge. These guidelines work to strengthen decision-making and improve outcomes and ensure consistent standards of care.
Focus on India-Specific Healthcare Needs
India must develop its own context-specific healthcare solutions rather than rely on solely on Western clinical models. Nadda stressed on the fact that early detection is one of the biggest hurdles in lung cancer management. The guidelines are developed by experts under the Department of Health Research and the Directorate General of Health Services. Although the guidelines utilize internationally accepted scientific methods but are tailored to India’s disease burden and healthcare realities. They focus on both survival and quality of life.
Reducing Disparities and Improving Access to Care
These guidelines are expected to help in standardising care across states, reducing disparities between public and private hospitals and improving access to palliative services. Simple language summary will also be issued to help patients in better understanding the treatment options.

The release marks a significant milestone as lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer deaths. India’s first evidence-based lung cancer framework sets the stage for more effective cancer care.
