Simple Urine Test Could Identify Lung Cancer at Early Stage

Posted on June 1, 2026
Post Views: 70

Lung CancerMost lung cancer cases are identified at advanced stages and thus, complicate the treatment and reduce survival chances. Early identification of lung cancer is helpful in saving more lives as the disease often relapses silently with few or no symptoms till it has already advanced to a later stage.

New Urine Test Targets “Zombie” Cells

As published in Nature Aging, the trailblazing team has shown that a simple and affordable test could detect the early signs of lung cancer. Cambridge scientists hunting ‘zombie’ cells that signal early lung cancer have pioneered a urine test that could transform diagnosis and survival for thousands of patients. This new method works by identifying the presence of senescent cells in the lungs which are also called as “zombie cells.”  These cells stop dividing but linger and release abnormal inflammatory signals that damage surrounding tissues. They create an environment that reduces one’s ability to fight against lung cancer.

Cambridge Scientists Develop Innovative Test

The scientists at the University of Cambridge have created an innovative test, funded by Cancer Research UK. It identifies specific “zombie” cell proteins that are capable of identifying early-stage lung cancer. This breakthrough research could allow for detection of lung cancer months or even years before symptoms appear.

Potential Benefits for Diagnosis and Treatment

This simple urine test can spot lung cancer and treatment resistance at an early stage. This will help doctors to adapt the treatment according to the patient and start lung cancer treatment at early stage.

Study Status and Research Background

The research is an early stage and preclinical laboratory work with no patient involvement yet. The study has been published this week and is led by Professor Ljiljana Fruk and Professor Daniel Muñoz-Espín at the University of Cambridge. This study marks a major leap towards more precise therapy and test for early cancer diagnosis.

FAQ

What is the new urine test for lung cancer?

It is a simple test that detects proteins from “zombie” cells linked to early-stage lung cancer.

How does the urine test identify lung cancer?

The test looks for senescent or “zombie” cell markers that may signal early lung cancer development.

Can this test detect lung cancer before symptoms appear?

Researchers believe it may detect lung cancer months or even years before symptoms develop.

Is the urine test available for patients now?

No. The research is still in the early preclinical stage with no patient testing yet.
