Popcorn Lung vs Lung Cancer: An Introduction

Lung CancerHave you heard about popcorn lung? Is this same as lung cancer? Which one is more dangerous? In this article, we explain both conditions in a simple language:

What is Popcorn Lung?

Popcorn lung is the nickname of lung disease called Bronchiolitis Obliterans. It is not cancer but is responsible for damaging lungs permanently. The nickname was derived when factory workers who made microwave popcorn got this disease after inhaling a chemical used for butter flavoring.

Causes of Popcorn Lung

Generally, the main causes for popcorn lung is inhaling harmful chemicals. These include but not limited to diacetyl, industrial fumes etc. Those who work in factories or chemical plants are at higher risk.

Diagnosis of Popcorn Lung

This disease is diagnosed by using various tests and scans. Pulmonary Function Tests are done to show blocked airways, CT scans are done to find special pattern on lungs and sometimes, lung biopsy is also done to confirm the disease.

Lung Cancer

On the other hand, lung cancer is a dangerous disease where abnormal cells grow uncontrollably and form a lump or tumor. Lung cancer is a malignant disease and can spread to other parts of the body when not treated on time.

Wrapping Up

Even though both Popcorn lung and lung cancer affect the lungs but are different diseases in terms of causes, nature, symptoms and treatment. Popcorn lung does not turn into lung cancer. Popcorn lung is a rare inflammatory disease while the other is a common type of cancer. Both deserve timely medical attention and one should never ignore even the small signs.
