India has taken a major step towards lung cancer treatment with launch of a new seven-minute NSCLC injection. Roche Pharma India has introduced a new drug called Tecentriq and is designed to make immunotherapy more convenient. This new injection is given under the skin and takes only about seven minutes.
What is Tecentriq SC?
Tecentriq is usually administrated via IV and is designed to treat non-small cell lung cancer after surgery and chemotherapy. The version that has been launched in India is called Tecentriq SC and is subcutaneous. It is the world’s first subcutaneous immunotherapy and is aimed at treating certain types of lung cancer.
Faster and More Convenient Treatment
“Patients spend at least five hours in a hospital on average. And along with them is a dedicated, also burdened, family member and caregiver,” said Dr Sivabalan Sivanesan, Chief Medical Officer at Roche Pharma India. “We believe we have brought a huge leap forward in how cancer can actually be reimagined,” he added.
Who Can Benefit from Tecentriq SC?
Tecentriq SC is approved for NSCLC patients, both at an early post-surgery stage and for advanced disease. This new treatment is meant for those with NSCLC and it accounts for majority of over 81000 lung cancer cases diagnosed in the country each year. It is believed that this new method could improve patient’s comfort.
Cost and Eligibility Concerns
However, the treatment has also raised concerns due to its high cost. The drug costs around ₹3.7 lakh per dose, with many patients requiring about six doses during the lung cancer treatment. Also, this new injection highlights the growing role of immunotherapy in cancer care.
Though the injection is meant for NSCLC patients but not every patient qualifies for it. Doctors first check whether patient’s cancer cells have high levels of PD-L1 protein or not as those with higher PD-L1 levels are more likely to benefit from this drug.
