American Scientists have identified two naturally occurring molecules that can help in slowing down the progression of lung cancer. The findings of the study have been published in journal, FASEB BioAdvances.
How the MicroRNAs Work
In this study, the researchers studied non-small cell lung cancer cells and found that by restoring the levels of two microns microRNA-15a and microRNA-16, it reduced the production of those proteins that tumors require for rapid development. Lung cancer develops when the body’s systems for controlling the growth of cells break down and thus, the cells go on multiply unchecked. These small molecules regulate gene activity and help in controlling cell growth and division processes.
Researchers Explain the Findings
“These two specific microRNAs have a profound influence on cellular proteostasis, and the disruption of cellular proteostasis in most cancer cells is the reason that they become cancerous,” said Dr. James Fluckey, associate dean for research and a professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Sport Management and the study’s principal investigator. “The fact that we found two mircoRNAs that can influence that proteostasis to slow cancer progression is of profound importance.”
Restoring Normal Cell Growth
MicroRNAs help to regulate the signals that tell cells to grow, divide, repair or slow down. This ensures cells to maintain a healthy balance. The team found that restoring microRNA-15a and microRNA-16 in lung cancer cells helped reestablish some of those normal controls and reduced both protein production and cell growth.
Study Limitations and Future Research
Although findings of the study are promising but researchers emphasize that the study does not represent a cure for lung cancer. Also, their findings suggest a potential strategy to slow down the growth of tumor and restore more normal cellular behavior. The team is now working towards methods that could deliver microRNA-based therapies directly to cancer cells.
